ARE NEGATIVE GLASSDOOR REVIEWS HURTING YOUR COMPANY’S REPUTATION & RECRUITMENT EFFORTS?

Positive reviews on the career website Glassdoor.com are a great way to attract people to join your company. When job seekers see that a company is a great place to work, it is much easier to attract and retain top talent. On the other hand, it can be hard to recruit new employees if you have negative reviews on Glassdoor – it can even hurt your company when it comes to attracting new customers. After all, no one likes to engage with a company that has a reputation for treating employees badly. To further complicate the issue, Glassdoor is deemed “highly authoritative” in search engine results, meaning it is very likely to be one of the top search results when you “Google” your company’s name.

While some negative Glassdoor reviews are legitimate and provide constructive feedback for improvement, oftentimes disgruntled employees or competitors will attempt to attack companies with negative, false, and defamatory reviews on Glassdoor. This is largely due to the anonymous nature of Glassdoor. Anyone with an Internet connection can submit a review to the site without any meaningful verification, which means they might use the site to settle a score. From our extensive experience and conversations with HR Managers, CEOs, etc. – we have created a list of frequently asked questions below that will likely answer many of the questions you have related to removing negative Glassdoor reviews.

Glassdoor Review Removal FAQs:

Can Negative Glassdoor reviews be deleted?

Yes! Glassdoor has an internal process to try to stop fake and malicious reviews from being published. However, the process is far from foolproof – as fake and false reviews on Glassdoor are published on a daily basis. If you find yourself in the position of having negative, false, or defamatory reviews on Glassdoor – know that Glassdoor reviews can be deleted.

Over the past 9+ years, our team of Glassdoor Review Removal experts have helped thousands of companies permanently remove harmful reviews from Glassdoor. It’s important to know that just because you determine a review is fake or false does not guarantee it will be removed from Glassdoor. For a Glassdoor review to be considered for removal, there must be a direct violation of Glassdoor’s community guidelines, and/or terms of service. In other words, you can’t simply remove unwanted Glassdoor reviews that you don’t like. Our team of Glassdoor Review Removal consultants can help you determine the most optimal and effective strategy for removing Glassdoor reviews. You typically only get one chance to remove a negative and fake review from Glassdoor, so it’s recommended to seek expert guidance if you are being unfairly attacked.

Can businesses pay Glassdoor to remove negative reviews?

No! Businesses can’t pay Glassdoor to have negative Glassdoor reviews removed from the site. We have been asked by clients over the years if joining Glassdoor’s advertising programs will give them an “in” to getting negative reviews removed – this is 100% not the case. If Glassdoor were to engage in this activity, it would remove all credibility from its product offering and review platform. This means you can’t just pay to remove Glassdoor reviews you don’t like so that you can replace them with positive reviews. The site is protecting its reputation by not allowing businesses to pay them to remove reviews.

Can a company delete their Glassdoor profile?

No, unfortunately not. One of the more frustrating aspects of Glassdoor is that they do not allow you to remove or delete your company profile from the site. Even if you claim your free employer account, and then cancel it, the company review profile on Glassdoor will remain. Under current U.S based laws, Glassdoor is allowed to aggregate companies onto their platform without consent, and have no legal obligation to remove a company profile from their site. Their stance on this is as follows:

Because workplace transparency and job aggregation is a core part of our mission, we can’t agree to remove your company from Glassdoor if you ask us to do so.

Glassdoor provides a forum for candid discussion about what it’s like to work for any employer our job seekers want to know about. And we work to aggregate all the open job listings in the world. Relevant law allows us to host employer profiles and their publicly available open job listings without having to ask for permission.

If you have a Free Employer Account and want to cancel this free account, you may do so by following the instructions on our Close my Glassdoor account article. When you cancel your Free Employer Account, you’ll no longer be able to respond to reviews, have direct access to update your company information, or view basic analytics about your profile – it doesn’t mean that we’ll remove the employer profile itself.

Can you dispute & flag negative Glassdoor reviews?

Yes! Any review on Glassdoor (even if it is positive) can be disputed/flagged to try to get it removed. Glassdoor does have a Content Moderation Team that will review requests for all reviews that have been flagged. If you see bad Glassdoor reviews that you believe violate the site’s Community Guidelines or Terms of Use, you can report it directly to the site by flagging the review directly from your company’s profile page.

How to flag negative Glassdoor reviews

To flag a negative Glassdoor review, you first click the Flag icon that’s located below the negative review:

Once you click the “report” button, you’ll have to choose why you’re reporting the review:

After this step has been completed, you will have the opportunity to provide additional information as to why the review should be removed. This is the most critical part of the entire removal process. Given that you only have one chance to get the review removed, what information you provide Glassdoor will make or break your ability to get the review taken down.

If you’re unsure on how to remove negative Glassdoor reviews, and you would like professional help in removing the review in question, our Glassdoor Review Removal experts can help. Our team has removed thousands of reviews from Glassdoor since 2013, and can handle the entire removal process for you to give you the most optimal chance of removing the negative review. If you want to try to remove a negative Glassdoor review on your own, here is what you need to know:

  • Writing to Glassdoor in a rude or threatening manner will hurt your chances of removal.
  • Glassdoor does not care what is true or false within a review. One of the most common mistakes is reaching out to Glassdoor to explain why a review is fake/false and, therefore should be removed. This is almost always going to lead to the denial of your removal request.
  • Having in-depth knowledge of Glassdoor’s policies, guidelines, and terms of service will be critical to achieving the removal of the review.

Once you’ve completed these steps, the Glassdoor review removal process will be started, and the Content Moderation Team will inform you of the outcome within a few days.

What Kind of Negative Reviews Can Be Disputed and Removed from Glassdoor?

Glassdoor sets specific rules for what reviews can be challenged and removed from their site. You can challenge any review and ask them to take a look at it, but the site will only remove reviews that violate their community guidelines and/or terms of use. Below is a list of reasons why Glassdoor may remove a review:

  • The review reveals confidential or non-public information about the company
  • The review includes a link or advertisement, or has a substantial amount of quotes from another source
  • The review uses an excessive amount of capitalization
  • The review was published by an employee that violated the “1 review per year” policy
  • The review identifies an individual in the company by name who is not considered a public face of the company (C-suite, President, Director, etc.)
  • The review contains profanities, violent threats, or discrimination against a group or individual

Can I Ask the Reviewer to Remove or Edit A Negative Review?

Yes! A rarely used removal strategy is asking the person who posted the negative review to remove it from Glassdoor. Glassdoor allows all users to either edit or remove Glassdoor reviews as long as they were originally posted in the last 30 days. The clear issue with this strategy is that Glassdoor reviews are anonymous, so oftentimes, this is not a viable option to even consider – especially if you are part of a large company.

This option will only make sense if you are a small to midsize business and it is 100% clear who wrote the review. Keep in mind that depending on the context of the negative review, it may not be in your best interest to reach out to them if you believe they are disgruntled and unwilling to talk. There is always the risk that you will “poke the bear” and make the situation worse by contacting a disgruntled employee about a negative review.

How do I respond to a negative review on Glassdoor?

Sometimes you won’t be able to remove a negative review on Glassdoor. If this happens, you can still address negative Glassdoor reviews and turn them into positive ones. But how?

First, make sure that you respond retroactively and proactively to any negative reviews that are left about your company. Take a very positive approach, don’t simply respond that the person is wrong, and don’t get into an argument as to why you believe you’re right. It’s important to consider that your response will be seen by all future candidates looking at your company’s Glassdoor profile.

Instead, thank the person for leaving the review, no matter what it is. Acknowledge their thoughts are valid and communicate what you are doing to address them. Invite the reviewer to connect with you offline so you can address it even further. This will make your company look great to other prospective employees, even though the review started out negative. The reality is that all companies are likely to have negative Glassdoor reviews as their company grows and evolves. Responding to negative reviews gives you the opportunity to show prospective employees that you are addressing negative feedback and taking steps to improve the overall working environment.

Can you sue Glassdoor for a false or fake review?

Yes, but not advisable! Anyone has a legal right to sue Glassdoor for a false and defamatory review. Whether it’s a good idea or a waste of your time and money, though, is a different story. Right on their Help page, Glassdoor says that they fight lawsuits that are filed against them, and they claim that they typically win them as well.

Glassdoor says they wholeheartedly believe in protecting their users’ rights to free speech. Thanks to two federal laws, Glassdoor is also protected from legal liability for what users post on their site. Specifically, they state that the 1996 Communication Decency Act provides them “broad and far-reaching immunity” for all of the content that is created by their users.

Glassdoor also writes that employers who sue them for bad reviews could face financial penalties imposed by the courts. They could even be due legal fees from companies that sue them. In other words, suing Glassdoor for a false review is likely a losing proposition 99% of the time. Additionally, when a lawsuit is filed, the case becomes a public record and may be picked up by media outlets – which could cause a PR nightmare.

Does Glassdoor verify the identity of reviewers?

No! One of the major issues with Glassdoor is that there is no formal process in place to verify the identity of a reviewer. This leaves companies on Glassdoor exposed to fake reviews published by competitors or ex-employees with an axe to grind. Even Glassdoor themselves state that the truthfulness of reviews can not be confirmed. They take the following stance:

At Glassdoor, we aim to verify as much of our data as possible. Considering the reality of our digital age, however, we’re unable to fully confirm our users’ identities, the truthfulness of their contributions, or their employment status.

Through our Terms of Use, we do require users to certify their employee relationships to companies when posting any content. We also require email verification from a permanent, active email address, or a valid social networking account.

Along with our active community moderation and our commitment to review every contribution, this verification process helps us identify suspicious users or posts and ensures our confidence in the information we provide to job seekers.
